Mathes Hulme Builders is a Brattleboro, Vermont-based construction firm working in the surrounding tristate region. We are a family-oriented company who believes in providing dignified and sustainable employment to our crew. Our team is trained in the latest building science techniques and is committed to environmentally-conscious building practice.
The “Mathes” and “Hulme” of Mathes Hulme Builders are owners Scott Mathes and Gabriel Hulme. Both builders had a vision for a creating a new kind of construction company; one that challenged the contractor stereotype and is based on good communication, transparency, trust and quality craftsmanship.
Gabriel Hulme grew up in Marlboro, VT, but originally hails from Australia and has a deep appreciation of modern and sleek design. He finds the collaborative process of construction--working with the Architect, client and project team--to be very rewarding. Gabe loves the sense of accomplishment that comes with a completed, well-executed project and a happy customer. Gabe is a Passive House Certified Builder. He is an avid cross country skier and bicyclist and a master in the kitchen.
Scott Mathes lives in Guilford, Vermont with his wife and two sons. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a BFA in printmaking and is an accomplished artist. Scott has been in the building trades for over 20 years and is an exceptional timberframer and fine finish carpenter. He is an Efficiency Vermont Certified Zero Energy Remodeler and an all-around nice guy. Scott enjoys being outdoors, and, as he puts it, “silviculture” or the practice of controlling the establishment, growth, composition, health, and quality of forests to meet diverse needs and values.
"Working as an architect on several of their projects, I've been impressed by the level of commitment at Mathes Hulme Builders at every level. Their attention to detail in the field, their creative solutions to tricky problems, and their care for their clients are all exceptional. They are great teammates for projects large and small – from kitchen renovations to farm stores and Passive Houses."
